Why Drywall Prep is the Secret to a Flawless Paint Job

It’s What’s Underneath That Counts

Many homeowners think painting is just about picking a color and rolling it on. But the difference between a DIY job and a professional finish often comes down to one boring but critical step: Preparation.

The Challenge of Wood Paneling and Old Drywall

In our recent project (check out our portfolio for the full transformation), we tackled a home filled with dated wood paneling and bright yellow walls. The challenge wasn't just covering the color—it was managing the texture.

If you paint directly over wood paneling without proper sanding and a bonding primer, the paint can scratch off easily. If you paint over old drywall without patching nail pops or settling cracks, the new glossy paint will actually highlight those flaws rather than hide them.

Our Process for Smooth Walls

  • Assessment: We identify every ding, crack, and uneven seam.
  • Repair: We use professional joint compound to fill and level imperfections.
  • Sanding: This is messy but essential. We sand repairs flush so they disappear under the paint.
  • Priming: Especially for drastic color changes or covering wood, a high-quality primer ensures uniform sheen and color accuracy.

The Result: A home that feels brand new. By investing time in drywall repair and surface prep, the final coat of paint looks richer, smoother, and lasts significantly longer.
